Cassino

Number two city in the province for population, for centuries it was the main centre of the Terra di San Benedetto, annexed since the Middle Ages to the Terra di Lavoro. The last city to the south of the Latina Valley. It stretches at the foot of the mountain that encloses the valley and on which the famous Montecassino abbey stands, along a historically strategic course for communications between central and southern Italy. Practically totally destroyed by the bombs of World War II and, for this reason, it is also known as the martyr city. It was completely rebuilt after the war.
